The precious beauty of opal – it’s been recognized for thousands of years.  Opals have been sold and traded for centuries, in fact, throughout much of history.  It is found in few parts of the world, over 90% coming from Australia.   The names Lightning Ridge, Mintabie, and Coober Pedy are familiar to those who know opal, for these are some of the famous Australian mines that yield the precious gems.  Recently there is also some amazing quality opal being found in Ethiopia, which posseses beauty equivalent to it's Australian relative.

Opal has many personalities.  There is black opal, white opal, or crystal opal, each containing fire of any color found in the spectrum of a rainbow, or a combination of many dazzling colors.

But the most unique characteristic about opal to a flintknapper is the marvelous fact that it can be flaked or knapped the same as flint or obsidian, thus opal arrowheads!  They make completely unique jewelry.
