I made this knife as a tribute to the great mammoths of the last ice-age and the tough and resourceful paleo people who knew and hunted them. The handle is in fact a piece of actual mineralized mammoth rib, capped with polished, scrimshawed ivory from a mammoth tusk. The scrim scene is, of course, a mammoth. Only an exceptional quality piece of stone could be used for such a knife. The Bullseye Jasper from Nevada from which I knapped the blade more than qualifies. The overall length is 11.25 inches.
This knife recently won the Best Custom Art Knife award at the 2010 Wolverine Knife Collectors Club annual show. In the midst of many talented knifemakers from the Midwest, it's a real honor and thrill for me.
